Earn Free PDUs by Volunteering!

Most of our certified professionals must accrue a minimum of sixty (60) Professional Development Units (PDUs) during each Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program cycle.  The CCR cycle ends on December 31st of the 3rd full calendar year following the year of your examination.  If you took the test on April 9th, 2008, your CCR cycle would end on December 31st, 2011.  You have 12 months to submit all PDU entries following the cycle that the activities were completed.  If you have any questions as to what constitutes a PDU entry, you will find the answers under the qualifying section of the CCR Program Handbook found on the PMI website.

There are so many things that you can do to earn FREE units.  There are obviously many courses and seminars that you can attend that will require additional costs as well as time away from work.  If you are interested in some of the opportunities that do not require additional time away from work or substantial out of pocket expenses you may want to get more involved with the PMI organization.  For example, every dinner meeting you attend is worth at least one (1) PDU.  You may also choose to join a committee as a volunteer.  There are many volunteer positions available.  The time you put in can also be custom fit for your needs.  If you only have 30 minutes a week we can find a position that will fit your needs.  If you are on a committee for one year, that equals five (5) PDUs.

Other ways to earn PDUs:

  • Provide project management related services to a community or charitable group = 5 PDUs
  • Three month committee member for PMI group = 1 PDU
  • Write an article and submit to a non-refereed journal (Project Mgmt Journal) and it gets published = 30 PDUs
  • Write an article and submit to a refereed journal (PM Network) and it gets published = 15 PDUs
  • Speaker on project mgmt topic at a conference or workshop = 10 PDUs
  • Member or moderator at a PM panel discussion at a conference or workshop = 5 PDUs
  • Developer of content or a structured project mgmt learning program = 10 PDUs
